Presentation of the School:
The « Ecole de Français à Kep» aims to help the inhabitants of Kep and especially the children from the neighbourhood of the « Vieux Casino ». The school is free for everybody.
The lessons which are provided in one single class room, can welcome until thirty students. We offer one hour of French class per level each day of the week (from Monday to Friday) for those following categories:

The Little Ones………..5-8 years
The Younger Ones…….8-12 years
The Medium (Pupils)…12-15 years
The Older (Pupils)…....15-18 years
The Adults……………. + 18 years (staff from guest houses and Older Pupils well advanced)
We also propose sport and artistic activities (volley, dance, painting…), disciplines absents from Public schools in Cambodia. At last, we pay attention to provide to younger and little ones educational as well as recreational games
On the site of the school, there is currently one main building, composed of the class room and a polyvalent room where we stock the main outfits (pedagogical, material). The first floor offers a space where students can do any quiet activity. A well has been built recently on the site, mainly for the plants but also to refresh children when it is getting too hot. The school also has a volley-ball field, a vegetable garden and a ‘kiosk’ (shelter) where we can either teach, organize events (like cinema projections, anniversaries) or just wait before class.

Professional issues:
For the children, learning French is an advantage because this language is rarely taught and thus not well attested (especially among the new generations of Cambodians). Nevertheless there is a current revival of interest among francophone investors and tourists who search for Khmers French speakers. This is especially the case for the region of Kep, little village founded by the French community during the protectorate (1853-1963). Thus, it sets a valuable aspect for the professional careers of the children not only in the tourist sector of Kep, but also in the tertiary sector - with many other occupations like translator, journalist, French teacher, etc. At last but not at least, by initiating them to arts and sports, we hope to foster some vocations in artistic fields or even professional sport careers.
Cultural orientations:
To allow the French language to be known equally contributes to built peace, by giving the students and their parents the possibility to interact with us and understand more about our culture in ‘the house of teachers’ called the ‘Caméléon’ (located near by the school) opened everyday of the week.
Pedagogical goals:
The lessons allow our students to get enough acquainted with French to read, write and understand simple conversations after one year (the Khmer alphabet is totally different from the Latin alphabet). After two years, they will be able to participate to simple conversations. And after three years, they will participate to complex conversations.
Methodology:
The teachers mainly use books of French Foreign Studies, among some of which have been given by the French Cultural Centre of Phnom Penh.
The teachers are formed to western methodologies promoting freedom and equality of expression as well as understanding. In this sense the participation of the students is actively promoted without a too strong authority from the professors. The presence of western teachers also contributes to motivate the students. And a khmer assistant who speaks English and French, attends the classes to reinforce the acquisition of knowledge.
